Grains of sand ground the flesh between my eyeball and its protective lid, slicing micrometer trenches into the white and across the lens. Such tiny things, grains of sand. Beautiful in the right places, but in the wrong places cause lightning bursts of pain and forever darkness. The urge to cry out is nearly overwhelming, as my brain explodes with white hot flames every time I try to open them.

But I need to see.

To see them before they see me.

To see the harvesters.

Crunch…Crunch

Footsteps on gravel. Someone is near. Walking slowly. Stalking. Harvesters are not what they call themselves, that’s our name for them. They call themselves The People’s Council of Rights. It is not what you think if you are from before. The name of the unit does not refer to the rights of human beings. It refers to them running around forcing everyone into “Right-Thoughts that Lead to Right-Actions”.
