“Let go and lay on the floor,” Kharzai had to shout to be heard over the noise in the tunnels beyond the red door in control room number three.
They let go and dropped flat, hands reflexively covering their heads. The giant at the blue door intensified its pounding. The floor rumbled, the walls shook, and the world seemed as it would fly apart at any moment.
Then, as if smoothed and flattened by an expert hand, all abruptly calmed. They could still hear the deep roar of the power flowing past outside. But the pounding on the blue door stopped, and the crash of giants running up the tunnel ceased.
They slowly raised their heads, Kaz and Golda looking to the shaman for guidance. Kharzai stared back at them, then carefully rose, first to his knees, then standing. He nodded to the others and they stood too.
“Press the gems again,” he said, “just like last time.”
