The Selkie Maiden
Oceans and Sand
1586
Oh my lovely Selkie maiden
beauty of the sea
upon the moonlit strand my feet
unto thy lovely form didst lead
together did we frolic
we upon our beach
Till one day thou didst
turn and smile before the solemn waves
and shed thy cloak of seafolk kind
thou rolled thy wondrous furry pelt
laid upon my hands
Take me into thy home ye said
with thee I shall remain
I hid it not
they lovely cloak
for gave it ye to me
ye set it in my hands to keep
until I set thee free
to return to seafolk lands
Although I never hid thy skin
but set it on the shelf
thou didst never flee from me
willingly thou laid aside
what was thine own true self
to frolic laugh and love with me
to remain above thine ocean world
